Brave Men S1E9: Kill Your Giant Today!

It's Brave Men with Paul Lewis Cole, wisdom and courage for the journey. Brave Men starts now. I was sitting here at my desk about to record this for you and I noticed by chair is squeaking and it reminded me of this chair that I had a number of years ago and it was at a wooden chair and it was at a wooden desk and my wife loved it. It looked great in the home that we were living in at the time and I liked it also. It was not an expensive desk at all. In fact, it was worth anything but it was old. It was wood. It may have come out of an old bank building from 80 years ago. I liked it so I put a chair with it. We found an old chair and old wooden chair. The only problem was my computer sat at a little table off to my right and every time I turned from where I was writing facing forward at this desk to the right, I would turn and my chair would fall over. Little wheel would come out. That happened maybe one out of every three turns. Think about it. You're doing something and when I got up from my desk, I would have to get up and move to my left. So that meant I was always sitting down and turning to my right to my computer. So what out of three times that thing, what boom and I would tip over and then I'd reach down and put the wheel back in. I did that. For most likely, it seems to me as I recall it three to three and a half years, three and a half years where I would turn, hop the thing and it was unfixable. I'm sure somebody who was a brilliant carpenter could have fixed it, but I just kept sticking it back in. I'd do my work. I'd stick the wheel back in, turn, do my works, tip over. And then finally one day, I stopped, I went, wait a minute and I got in the car, drove down to a store and grabbed this the first desk chair I could find that had wheels that didn't fall off. We put up with things so often for so long, how many of us have a door in our home that we kick when we open it or we have a drawer that we kind of have to pull and then pull again in order to get open and we've just lived with it. Here's my word to you today. Kill your giant today, whatever it is that's the obstacle. And here's the picture, it's David and Goliath. And Goliath was in front of Israel, the Philistines, they were facing against Israel and the army was there and Goliath came up and he was the obstacle and you and I, both of us, we all have obstacles, we all have a Goliath, we all have a giant that's in our way. My dear friend Tommy Sirotnik used to say this, he used to say, if there's no obstacles in the path of your life, you're on the wrong path, you're not headed the right direction. If there are no obstacles, you're not trying to get anything done. And so today, here's my word for you, kill the giant today, kill the giant today. David was a young man who had been anointed by God, Samuel had prayed over him. He was supposed to be the king, but his dad had sent him back out to the fields. And now his dad was sending him to reach his brothers with some food. Maybe he's 16, 17 years old and he's given biscuits to hand carry to his brothers. I mean, this guy's dad, David's dad didn't think too highly of him. In fact, when Samuel came to anointed a king, when you read this in the scriptures, you read that Jesse, his dad said, hey, he had eight sons. He said, all right, Samuel's coming, he's going to anoint a king. One of you is going to be king. One of you will be the king, hang on, hang on. It won't be you, David. You can go to the field and he sent him back out to the field. I mean, what would that have been like? So his dad, now he's anointed king and a few years later, his brothers have gone off to fight, not him. He's still out there with the goats and the sheep, but anointed by God, he's killed a bear and a lion. Now here's what happens. Goliath is there, here's the point of this. Goliath is there, David shows up. His brothers now are giving him a bad time because he said somebody needs to kill this guy. And his brothers go, hey, man, you know, it's 40 days this giant has come out. 40 days and nights, Goliath has come out in front of Israel and said, hey, give me a champion. Let's fight, whoever wins, wins the battle. Nobody else has to die. Just the guy who loses and Goliath says, and it won't be me. And David said this young man who has a relationship with God has a sense of his identity. David says to his brothers, hey, somebody needs to kill that guy. Now think about this, 40 days and 40 nights. Goliath has been coming out in front of Saul. God's anointed king at the time in that sense. Samuel had anointed him. Jonathan is there. All these great men of war are there. And the giant comes out and all of those men look at it and go, you know what? This is not a good day to try to do this. Let's wait for tomorrow. Well, let's wait for the next day. Now think about this. This is what you and I do. This is what I do in my life so often. Hey, I'll wait till things get better. Then I'll attempt that. Then I'll try to kill the giant. You know, when I'm feeling a little stronger when I'm feeling, yeah, you know, I've had like three days of living extremely holy, you know. And then we're going to kill the giant. Then we're going to kill that habit, the anger, the issue, the problems we're dealing with, the obstacle, the phone call we need to make that we haven't made yet. The relational thing we haven't faced, the thing we're supposed to tell our children we haven't done, what we're supposed to tell our boss, what we're supposed to call a client and tell him and we haven't done it. Kill your Goliath today. Kill the giant today. Israel, the army kept waiting day after day, after day waiting for something to happen. You know, maybe they were talking to each other and one guy turned to the other and said, hey, maybe today he'll trip. You know, he's coming down that mountain path. It looks a little dicey. Now maybe he'll trip. Maybe he'll fall. You know, waiting for something to happen, it's insane. And we do that. All of us do. We sit in chairs that tip over day after day. But here's what David said. Here's the key. David said this because we don't know how David felt. Maybe he had had a long trip. Maybe he was tired. Maybe he had a sprained ankle from something that happened on the trail. We know his brothers had embarrassed him, had belittled him. But here's what he said to Goliath. He said, you know, you can come at me with a sword and a spear and a javelin, but I come at you in the name of the Lord. The God of Israel, whom you have defied. So now he says, I've got something here. I've got a power in me you don't have. Obstacle, giant. And he says this. And today the Lord will cock you. I'm going to kill you and give your bodies to the birds and the animals and everybody will know how great God is. Here's the key. David says today and then it says and David quickly ran out. He ran to the battle and met him. Here's the key for you and me. Here's the key of this moment on Brave Men. Stand up, make the call, kill the giant. Kill the giant today. Don't let your giants stay alive. Kill the giant today. Don't waste time, get it done. Don't let your giant have another day. Just say to it, I'm taking you out now and then whatever it takes to do that, make it happen. Make the phone call. Call the credit card company. Call the IRS. Call the business partner. Sit down and write the thing you needed to have written last week and get it done today. Kill your giant today. The victory is today.
